Trauma
Trauma can be any change that occurs to your body and mind that is influenced by a stressful event or events. Your body reacts in a way that helps you survive that stressful or life-threatening event. Your body automatically goes through a process of:
Fight
Flight
Freeze
Faint
This automatic process helps you survive the real or perceived danger. It is common to experience a traumatic event without it having a major impact on your daily life. However, many times, we are unaware of how to make meaning out of this event(s) or our bodies may have difficulty feeling safe and tension-free. We may become stuck in our trauma. This experience can impact our daily functioning. We may feel triggered from past unsafe situations, which results in feeling emotionally, mentally, and physically unsafe.
Trauma may lead to the development of depression, anxiety, PTSD, substance abuse and other mental health vulnerabilities (this is not a diagnostic tool). It can also lead to chronic physical pain and other physical health concerns.
